‘Fellow teachers mock and jeer at us’

2008-02-19 00:00

Tensions at the embattled George Cato Primary in Cato Ridge have not subsided and teachers there have revealed that their work is suffering as a result.

Teachers who spoke to The Witness on condition of anonymity yesterday said that they have lodged a grievance with Education MEC Ina Cronje, and asked her to respond by yesterday to explain how the situation could be resolved.

White and Indian teachers alleged that they are still being intimidated. They said that one teacher was told to “F*** off” by another staff member and that they have been called demeaning versions of their names.

They also alleged that the acting principal was one of the crowd of protestors who brought the school to a standstill in January when protesting teachers cited racism after the groundskeeper allegedly struck a colleague.

Another said that there is little learning going on as the time table has not yet been implemented and some teachers are only taking two lessons a day.

“There is silent intimidation all the time. When we walk past a group of black teachers, they mock us and jeer at us. The situation has not improved — it’s got worse.”

Education Department spokesman Ntokozo Maphisa said yesterday that they are aware of the allegations by the Indian and white teachers and are investigating them.

He said that he could not reply on behalf of the MEC.

The teachers alleged that there is a high rate of absenteeism among teachers and that parents are getting fed up with the situation.

Attempts to elicit an interview with Cronje were unsuccessful yesterday.
