WHAT started off as a fender bender in the Pietermaritzburg CBD yesterday turned into a more serious accident when a driver hit two women sitting on a pavement.

The car initially hit the back of another car in Pietermaritz Street. Police who were in the area, witnessed the accident and assisted at the scene.

Milan Matabbar, whose car was initially hit, alleged that as the other driver moved to park, he accelerated and hit two women who were sitting on the pavement as well as a policeman who, however, managed to jump out of the way.

It is believed that one of the women had a broken leg and the other sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the other car was handcuffed and taken away by police.

In another rear-end accident, a man was seriously injured while another escaped with minor injuries on the N3 on Townhill.

A 17-year-old boy on a motorbike was seriously injured in a collision with a taxi at the intersection of College Road and Prince Alfred Street.
