Festive fare the order of the day

NOTHING too taxing is coming to the movie screens this weekend, with festive fare the order of the day.

Enchanted opens at both Ster Kinekor and CineCentre, with Love Wrecked also at Ster Kinekor, This Christmas at CineCentre and Aaja Nachle at Nu Metro. Bhool Bulaaiya remains in Sunday’s Bollywood slot at CineCentre.

Randal Kleiser directs Amanda Bynes, Chris Carmack, Jonathan Bennett and Fred Willard in Love Wrecked. The film has been on the shelf for a couple of years waiting for a release. It is the story of a love-struck teen who is “shipwrecked” on a desert island with a rock star. It sounds a bit like an episode of Survivor and overseas reviews have inclined to the dismissive.

Aaja Nachle is directed by Anil Mehta and marks Dixit Madhuri’s return to the screen after a five-year break while she was enjoying motherhood. She plays a New York-based dance instructor who returns to her home village in India after 11 years to find that the arts centre where she learned her craft is to be demolished and replaced with a shopping mall. So she sets out to save it. Also starring Irfan Khan, Kunal Kapoor and Askhaye Khanna.

Enchanted is Disney’s entry into the animated Christmas market which it once dominated. Kevin Lima directs. Here the real world and the animated mix in a fairy tale about a princess (Amy Adams) who is sent to our world by an evil queen (voiced by Susan Sarandon). Soon after her arrival, Princess Giselle begins to change her views on life and love after meeting a handsome lawyer (Patrick Dempsey). Julie Andrews is the narrator.

Preston A. Whitmore wrote and directs This Christmas, a seasonal tale of a family getting together for Christmas for the first time in four years. Everyone has secrets and problems, and if past films of this kind are anything to go by, there is a happy ending on the cards. The cast includes Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, Loretta Devine and Chris Brown.
