Field of 400 for Bass Classic

2010-08-26 00:00

THE 30th Albert Falls Classic bass fishing tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday at Albert Falls Dam just outside Pietermaritzburg.

About 400 fishermen from all over southern Africa, including Zimbabwe and Swaziland, will take to the dam early on Saturday morning in an attempt to catch the biggest bass of the weekend.

The event is organised by the South African Bass Angling Association (SABAA) and all funds from the event go to members of the Proteas and Junior Proteas, bass fishing’s national sides.

Wendy Watson, SABAA secretary, said this year will be the first time that there will be limitations placed on the amount of entrants.

“We are limiting it to 200 boats [two per boat], otherwise it becomes a bit congested and quite unpleasant to fish as the dam is not huge,” she said.

“We already have around 160 boats who have confirmed.”

The fisherman who catches the heaviest largemouth bass will win the first prize of a fully-rigged bass boat valued at R230 000.

Other prizes up for grabs include a R3 000 cash prize for the junior winner.

Watson said she is optimistic: “The weather is supposed to be pleasant so hopefully we will get some good fishing in.”

There is limited space available for anglers who still want to enter.

The cost is R1 250 per two-man team.
