Fill up today and follow these saving tips

2011-04-05 00:00

FILL up with fuel today, as at midnight, another massive price increase comes into effect.

The petrol price will go up by 54 cents a litre, rising to just under R10 a litre (about R9,72: Coast 95 ULP). In April 2010 petrol cost was about R8,35 a litre. The price of diesel will increase by 70,4 cents a litre.

Automobile Association spokesperson Gary Ronald reminded motorists of basic fuel-saving tips.

•Keep tyres properly inflated.

•Anticipate traffic light changes so that braking and accelerating are minimised.

•Try and use just the first quarter of the accelerator movement and for the best results under normal driving conditions, try to keep the accelerator pressure steady.

•When your tank is empty and you need to stretch every drop to reach a filling station, you can actually halve your consumption by using this effective technique: Accelerate slowly, using only the first quarter of the throttle movement, until you reach 70 km/h to 80 km/h. Shift into neutral, leave engine idling to keep brake and power steering operative, and allow road speed to drop to 25 km/h. Repeat the cycle.

•Lower gears use an excessive amount of fuel.

•Open windows create a drag that increases fuel consumption by as much as 20%.

•Never ride the clutch to hold your car on an incline. With an automatic transmission, never use the accelerator to hold against an incline. — WR.
