Film Review: Drona

2008-10-19 00:00

Goldie Behl makes his second attempt as director after Bas Itna Sa Kwab and I can confidently say he can consider his attempt with Drona a total distaster.

I don’t know whether to consider Drona a superhero or a fantasy story — all I can say is that the director’s imagination ran amok. Drona tells a tale of a clan warrior trying to protect a supreme secret of the elixir of life.

Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan) spends his childhood with his foster parents amid taunts and humiliation. Then there’s Riz Raizada (Kay Kay Menon), a descendant of the Asuras. Riz is desperate for a supreme secret — the amrit. But to lay his hands on this amrit he will have to defeat Drona. But the problem is Riz does not know who Drona is.

One eventful day Aditya and Riz cross paths. Riz notices the kada worn by Aditya and is convinced that he is Drona.

Riz’s goons pursue Aditya, but he is saved by Sonia (Priyanka Chopra), who reveals Aditya’s real identity and takes him to his birth place.

Then our superhero’s journey begins as a protector of the pious secret, followed by a battle between good and evil.

Abhishek Bachchan is a very good actor, but the role of Drona is not right for him. Priyanka Chopra as Drona’s protector is fantastic. Kay Kay Menon gives a bit of an over-the-top performance.

Behl’s fantasy superhero venture lacks soul and has a very weak script — very good striking visuals, but no storyline.

Drona is a boring film with sub-standard performances. Watch at your own risk.
