Film review: God Tussi Great Ho

2008-09-01 00:00

Writer-turned-debutant director Rumi Jaffery penned the storyline of God Tussi Great Ho, based on the Hollywood flick Bruce Almighty with other ingredients borrowed from the ’70s version of Yehi Hai Zindagi, a Sanjeev Kumar starrer. God Tussi Great Ho is a slapstick comedy with dull humour.

Arun Pajapati (Salman Khan) is a man devastatingly out of luck (phooti kismat). He works for a TV channel and his first show is a major flop. He has a huge crush on his colleague Alia (Priyanka Chopra), but is afraid to express his feelings. Things go really sour for him when a professional and romantic rival, Rocky (Sohail Khan), arrives at the TV channel and keeps outshining him. Back home Arun has a bickering relationship with his retired father (Anupam Kher). Arun excessively blames God for all his problems and curses the sky every time something goes wrong.

Finally, Arun loses his job and vents his anger at the Almighty for making his life a mess. And before we know it, God (Amitabh Bachchan) Himself appears and grants Arun his divine power for 10 days to do a better job of running this complicated world.

With the power of God behind Arun this is followed by unprecedented mayhem filled with corny gags.

Salman Khan manages to give an average performance and pulls off some scenes with aplomb, but Priyanka Chopra is really wasted. Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of God is just to add oomph, while Sohail Khan and Anupam Kher have a couple of good scenes.

Jaffery really disappoints as it is a poor rehash with a tragic lack of originality. **
