Film review: Jodhaa Akbar ****

2008-03-10 00:00

Film-maker Ashutosh Gowarikar over the years has struck the right chord in Bollywood with brilliant films like Lagaan and Swades. Now he enchants us with a Mogul epic Jodhaa Akbar — an untold love story that is bound to leave you spellbound.

Set in the 16th century, Jodhaa Akbar is the love story of a marriage alliance that gave birth to true love between a young handsome king, Akbar (Hrithik Roshan), and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). Akbar wants all kingdoms under his sovereignty in Hindustan, and expands his kingdom with an empathetic heart for his enemies.

The Rajputs did not bow down to Akbar’s command, but King Bharmal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) compromises that Akbar can only rule if he marries his daughter Jodhaa. The defiant Hindu princess Jodhaa presents her conditions to Akbar before and after marriage as she refuses to be reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage alliance.

This is followed by the gradual flowering of love between Jodhaa and Akbar and the cunning plots of those that don’t want their love to succeed.

Hrithik Roshan was born to play King Akbar. The role was tailor made for him and he plays it with finesse. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Princess Jodhaa is brilliant — a flawless performance.

Gowarikar does a brilliant job in showcasing this untold love story between the titular lovers that leaves you spellbound. This is definitely another feather in the cap for Gowariker.

This is a brilliant film that will mesmerise you; I strongly recommend you watch it.
