Film review: U Me Aur Hum

2008-04-28 00:00

Real Iife husband and wife team Ajay and Kajol Devgan are known as seasoned actors, but their on-screen chemistry never really struck the right chord at the box office. But Devgan makes his directorial debut with a soul-stirring subject that is high in emotional quotient.

Ajay (Devgan) is aboard a cruise with his friends Nikhil (Sumeet Raghavan) and Reena (Divya Dutta) — who have their fair share of marital problems — and Vicky (Karan Khanna) and Natasha (Isha Sharwani), who are happily married. Ajay crosses paths with Piya (Kajol), a bartender on the ship, and it is love at first sight for him. After one too many drinks, Piya watches Ajay make a spectacle of himself before passing out.

After that disastrous first meeting with Piya, Ajay tries this best to woo her, but she rebuffs his advances. Ajay breaks into Piya’s cabin and reads her personal diary Book of Possibilities. Ajay, being a psychiatrist by profession, learns about her personal desires and then he dances his way into her heart. A special bond develops between them, followed by marriage.

But marriage is not a bed of roses and they are faced with a fair share of problems. Piya is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. There are dramatic moments shown in flashback — which sustains interest and also leads to fragmentation — will they surmount this hurdle and become “hum” or will they drift apart?

Devgan gives a brilliant performance, one of his best to date. Kajol is beautiful and also gives an outstanding performance. The other characters excel.

Though a debutant director, Devgan gives us a moving, evocative, passionate, soul stirring and emotionally high quotient drama straight from the heart.

I strongly recommend you watch this film — but don’t forget your tissues. ****
