Films: Two this week

2010-10-01 00:00

TWO films open in Pietermaritzburg this weekend — the animated feature Despicable Me and Tyler Perry’s comedy-drama, Why Did I Get Married Too?.

Chris Meledandri, the man behind Ice Age and Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!, is the producer of Despicable Me, which tells the story of one of the world’s greatest super-villains who meets his biggest challenge when three children enter his life.

In a happy suburban neighbourhood sits a black house with a dead lawn. Hidden deep beneath this home is a secret hideout where Gru (Steve Carrell) and his army of mischievous little minions are planning the biggest heist in the history of the world — they are going to steal the moon.

Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, Gru vanquishes all who stand in his way — until the day he encounters three little orphaned girls who look at him and see a potential dad.

Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? (a sequel to 2007’s Why Did I Get Married?) tells the story of four couples who gather at a resort in the Bahamas for their annual one-week reunion, only to have it disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Sheila’s (Jill Scott) ex-husband, Mike (Richard T. Jones).

It also turns out that Sheila’s new husband Troy (Lamman Rucker) is having trouble finding a job since they moved from Colorado to Atlanta; Dianne (Sharon Leal) is suddenly very happy and full of energy, which makes Terry (Perry) suspect that she’s cheating; and Angela (Tasha Smith) fears that Marcus (Michael Jai White) can’t be faithful since he has a high-paying job as a sportscaster and lots of female fans.
