Final details of King Shaka statue still undecided

2010-08-24 00:00

THE details of the final appearance of the much anticipated statue of King Shaka to be erected at the new airport have not yet been completed as the task team is still reviewing the public findings.

This comes after the refusal in June by the Zulu royal family to acknowledge the first statue because they felt it portrayed King Shaka less as a warrior than as a “herd boy” as he was accompanied by Nguni cattle and without a spear and shield.

The team included historian Jabulani Maphalala, UKZN history lecturer Jabulani Sithole, Dr Vusi Shongwe, head of the heritage directorate in the premier’s office, his colleague Brian Thusi, heritage consultant Musa Xulu, Reverend Vikinduku Nculwane, princes Mbonisi Zulu, Thulani Zulu and Zeblon Zulu, and praise singer Buzetsheni Mdletshe.

Prince Mbonisi Zulu said: “A delegation has met members of the office of the premier to discuss the final details of what the statue of King Shaka would look like. However, no final decisions have been taken.”

Shongwe dismissed media reports that they have completed the final process.

The sculptor, Andries Botha, said: “I don’t know whether I will be part of the creation of the next statue of King Shaka.”

He said he believes the royal family have chosen Lieutenant James King’s depiction of King Shaka, which was drawn in 1825.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya, spokesperson for Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize said: “The premier will present a final report on the matter, which will cover all aspects, including the commissioning processes, in due course.”
