Final sting

2008-12-11 00:00

The Scorpions are not going out with a whimper. Although they are soon to be disbanded, they have not hesitated to lay a charge against KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Health, Peggy Nkonyeni, for corrupt practice. The issue involves the alleged procurement of a cancer scanning machine in morally dubious circumstances. It was controversial enough to cause a breakdown in the working relationship between the minister and her director-general, Busi Nyembezi, leading to Nyembezi’s suspension and subsequent resignation.

The African National Congress has reacted with a mantra identical to that used for the case against its president Jacob Zuma, claiming that the motive is political. The judiciary will have to decide whether that is the case, but will it have the chance to do so? The further question is whether the Scorpions’ successors will be as willing to pursue this case as the Scorpions have been to initiate it.
