Finalist: Online editor up for major award

2013-03-20 00:00

OUR online editor, Kyle Venktess, is a finalist in this year’s prestigious Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards.

Kyle is one of three finalists in Category 13, (multi-platform) where he is up against the Mail & Guardian and Daily Dispatch online teams.

This is a new category aimed at encouraging convergence and collaboration between print and online, to produce a better, more compelling story and cater for new audiences, say the judges.

Kyle’s work is related to the use of the ground-breaking augmented reality (AR) platform in The Witness, which ensures that the newspaper’s print edition comes to life long after it has hit the streets.

The Witness is the first newspaper in South Africa to use Aurasma.

“Kyle has proved to us that with creativity and the right attitude, the oldest continuously published newspaper in the country can innovate and be ahead of the curve,” said Witness editor Angela Quintal.

“We are very proud of him and are crossing our fingers that he wins the award on May 8.”

This year the panel received 812 entries from 265 journalists in several categories, up from the 800 entries by 220 journalists in 2012.
