Financial rescue team for uMngeni

2010-02-25 00:00

THE KZN provincial government has deployed a team of financial experts to the uMngeni Municipality to help its officials manage the town’s finances.

As part of the financial turnaround strategy, there will be a freeze on all expenditure, except absolute essentials.

The team will also review all current and recently awarded contracts, reschedule creditors as necessary and review long-term loans.

Councillors were told that if the municipality does not co-operate with the instructions of the turnaround team, the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Nomsa Dube, may intervene.

This intervention could be in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution. The section allows the MEC to dissolve the council and appoint an administrator until a new council is elected.

The municipality is the subject of a commission of inquiry appointed by KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize.

The commission is investigating allegations of fraud, corruption, and the abuse of financial resources at the municipality.
