Finding happiness

2009-08-21 00:00

TWO new films open in Pietermaritzburg this weekend — the family drama, Not Easily Broken at CineCentre and the romantic comedy, Management, at SterKinekor Scottsville.

Not Easily Broken is based on T. D. Jakes’s novel of the same name and tells the story of Dave (Morris Chestnut) and Clarice Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), who, after years of disagreeing on what true happiness, success, and love really are, have finally reached a breaking point in their marriage.

When Clarice is crippled in a car accident, Dave develops a friendship with Julie and her teenage son Bryson, and the acceptance and comfort Dave finds in them stirs his longing for a family and a passionate partner.

As Dave and Julie get closer and Clarice pulls farther away, the couple is forced to confront head-on the issue of whether or not their vows are easily broken.

Everyone’s favourite Friend, Jennifer Aniston, stars alongside Steve Zahn in Management, which tells the story of a chance meeting between the son of a motel owner, Mike Cranshaw, and a travelling art saleswoman, Sue Claussen, when the latter checks into a roadside motel owned by Mike’s parents in Arizona.

A bottle of wine, compliments of management, jump-starts the cross-country journey and unique courtship between these two very different people, who are ultimately looking for the same thing — a sense of happiness.
