Fined Roadlink bus driver arrested again

2010-04-23 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate arrested a Roadlink bus driver yesterday for the second time in two days for the same offence.

The driver had been fined R1 500 in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday, along with another driver, for contravening Section 50 of the National Land Transport Act.

At about 4.30 pm yesterday, the same driver was arrested with another Roadlink driver and a bus driver with Intercape. They were all charged with contravening the same Act. The three will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.

Said a traffic official, who asked to remain anonymous: “This is depressing us because we arrest these drivers and the court gives light fines. They return to the road to commit the same offences. We are going to approach the office of the MEC to push for harsher fines.”

RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said: “One of the Roadlink buses was operating with a permit that only allowed it to travel between Durban and Port Elizabeth, but it was carrying passengers to Gauteng.

“The second Roadlink bus and the Intercape bus were operating with tourism permits, that only allow them to carry tourists from an airport to any destination around the country and back to an airport. But none of their commuters were tourists.”

“We organised other buses to proceed with the stranded commuters,” said Mngomezulu.
