Fines: council gives 50% discount

2012-01-27 00:00

IN a bid to collect outstanding traffic fines, Msunduzi is offering motorists 50% off.

Seventy percent of traffic fines in Msunduzi are never paid.

The municipality applied to the Director of Public Prosecutions to reduce fines in a bid to collect some of the outstanding money.

The amnesty, for fines issued between January 1, 2009 and March 30, 2011, will be in place from February 1 to July 31. It will also apply to newly issued fines paid within 32 days.

The council’s executive committee heard that since 2009, R7 768 433 has been paid in traffic fines, but R51 532 million is owed in fines, and another R9 237 350 on warrants of arrest.

Mayor Chris Ndlela said the amnesty would help the council to avoid the challenge of having to go to court which is a cumbersome exercise, he said. Exco heard that the courts cannot cope with the number of fines issued. Exco was told 70% of the income from the fines amnesty will be set aside to be used by the risk management unit on operational and capital issues.
