Fire: Candle destroys homes on Christmas eve

2012-12-27 00:00

A BURNING candle neglected by a resident of an informal settlement in Durban’s Clare Estate caused a fire that destroyed 85 homes and displaced more than 150 people on Christmas Eve.

Two people were injured in the blaze in Palmiet Road.

“One person forgot to put out a candle. That is how the fire started,” said Mnikelo Ndabankulu, a spokesperson for Abahlali Basemjondolo, which campaigns for the rights of the homeless.

“The reason why these shacks burn is that there is no electricity,”

Ndabankulu added that eThekwini disaster management had helped with blankets and food.

About 40% of the settlement went up in smoke, he said.
