Fire department’s veterans awarded for 30 years’ service

THE legends of the controversial Msunduzi Fire Department experienced a proud moment when they celebrated 30 years of service in the fire department.

They recently attended a function in Cape Town where they were awarded with certificates and gold medals for their dedication in the fire department.

These men are amongst the first of 12 Indian firefighters who started in the fire service in South Africa in 1979.

Among the recipients of awards was the young Kavith Singh who scored the highest overall percentage in the national fire technology examination. Singh was awarded the Angus Floating Trophy.

It was indeed a proud moment for Ricky Pillay who has been part of the fire department for three decades.

“Today is a day I will cherish for as long as I live because we have been recognised for the work we do,” said Pillay.

He said that ever since he started in the fire department he has always enjoyed saving peoples lives and saving those that come into the world by delivering babies.

He added: “I have always had a passion to serve my community by doing my best to ensure that everybody is safe from harm’s way.”
