Fire engulfs part of lodge

2014-08-28 00:00

A LOCAL wedding venue nearly burnt down yesterday when a bush fire threatened to engulf the area.

Staff of Acacia Bush Lodge in Bishopstowe had a busy day fighting the fire.

They prevented the fire from reducing the lodge to ashes, but were unable to save the entertainment area. “It was midday when the fire came closer to the house as the wind was blowing heavily,” said one employee who did not want to be named.

Acacia owner Erika Abrahams said they tried their best to extinguish the fire. “We used all we have to put the fire out. Everyone was rushing with buckets and pipes to prevent the fire from destroying the lodge.

“This fire started in the neighbouring farms as a bush fire. It burnt our entertainment area, but we managed to prevent it from spreading to the houses …” she said.

Msunduzi fire department operations manager Juggie Padayachee said it was a busy day yesterday with fires all over the city.

They were called to blazes in Wembley, Chase Valley Road, Peter Brown Road and Harriet Colenso Road.

“We worked very hard because of the wind fanning grass fires around town. We prevented fires from destroying houses, but by the time we arrived at Acacia Bush Lodge the entertainment area was already destroyed,” said Padayachee.
