Fire team in new drive

2015-02-12 00:00

AFTER an extensive battle to extinguish fires across KwaZulu-Natal last year, KZN Working on Fire have embarked on a campaign to raise awareness.

Presentations at informal settlements and most fire-prone areas began in Howick in January.

The assistant general manager of Working on Fire, Winnie Ndlovu, said last year their team experienced the worst fire season in seven years in the province, having to extinguish 520 fires in areas such as Eshowe, Mbazwana, Kokstad and Qhudeni. Some resulted in fatalities.

“The province will conduct … a training camp to refresh the physical fitness of firefighters and to ensure that the province is ready to fight unwanted veld fires,” she said.

Ndlovu added they are also recruiting more firefighters to tackle unwanted veld and forest fires.

The campaign will run in the Midlands region — including Howick, Mooi River, Pietermaritzburg, Underberg, Ixopo and Greytown.
