Firearms raid: suspect allegedly killed in shoot-out

2012-12-18 00:00

POLICE Tactical Response Team members shot and killed an Impendle man at his home near Underberg on Sunday night, police said.

One of the unit members was wounded in the arm during an alleged shoot-out.

Howick police spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley said police received a tip-off about an illegal firearms cache at the man’s home.

When the police got to the house in the evening, Moodley said, the house was surrounded and the man was asked to come out and surrender.

The man allegedly shot at the police, wounding one.

The police fired back, killing him, he said.

Moodley said a licensed firearm belonging to the man was recovered from the scene, but no firearms cache was found in the man’s house.

It is not clear what could have led the man to shoot at the police.

Moodley said the matter was under investigation, and that the officer who was shot in the arm was recovering at a local hospital.
