Firm to close 56 stores

2011-04-06 00:00

METCASH trading Africa (Pty) Ltd yesterday announced major restructuring and rationalisation plans — including the closure of 56 stores on Saturday, April 9.

The plans are in line with a concentrated focus on the long-term sustainability of the company, Metcash said.

CEO Peter Dodson divulged the company’s proposals to close down the stores — which include Metro Cash & Carry and Trade Centres — adding that they plan to open a new range of hybrid stores later this year.

The hybrid stores will “bridge the gap between retail and wholesale”.

“It is always difficult to take a decision to close down existing stores and we remain mindful of how this will affect some of our staff members.” he said.

The company did not reveal the impact on stores and jobs in KZN. — WR.
