Firms ensure staff get to pay respects

AS Nelson Mandela is honoured at various memorial services around the country, companies are ensuring that their employees also get time to pay their last respects to the first democratic South African president.

Massmart Holdings will close its stores on Sunday, the day of Madiba’s funeral. Spokesperson Annaleigh Vallie said the decision came after consultation with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The brands affected include Builders Warehouse, Builders Express, Builders Trade Depot, Builders Superstore, CBW, Cambridge Food, DionWired, Game Stores, Jumbo Cash & Carry, Makro, and Rhino Cash & Carry.

Thekwini Toyota Group executive director Danny Govender said they would set up big screens for their employees to be part of the proceedings.

Tongaat Hulett’s Michelle Jean-Louis said employees would get time off work to participate in memorial services, while Pick n Pay’s operations general manager Wim Theron said they have “tried to be accommodating”.

In Pietermaritzburg, businesses revealed mixed plans for today’s memorial service. Some planned to give staff time off, or would provide TVs for those who wanted to watch the proceedings.
