Fish-impaled men’s condition stable

2014-04-29 00:00

GARY Clowes and Gareth Collingwood, the two men impaled by a Blue Marlin’s bill in a fishing competition off the coast of Durban over the weekend, remained in a stable condition in St Augustine’s hospital yesterday.

Collingwood was still in the intensive care ward, while Clowes had been moved to a general ward. Clowes, who was visited by friends and family yesterday, declined to comment when The Witness visited the hospital.

Collingwood’s wife said her priority was to ensure her husband recovered fully and would not comment further.

Marc Giesler, skipper of the Mduduze, the ski boat from which they were fishing, said the men were recovering in hospital.

Both men were severely injured when a Marlin leapt out of the water and over the front of the boat.

Clifford Ireland, NSRI Durban station commander, said after the incident that one of the injured crewmen had a laceration to his back, his rib cage had been “de-gloved” and there was a laceration to his stomach.

The other crewman had a laceration and puncture wound to his shoulder and back.
