Fishing competition drama

2011-05-04 00:00

VOLUNTEERS of the National Sea Rescue Institute, Port Edward, responded to two incidents at the Port Edward Ski Boat Classic last Saturday.

Crew on board the ski-boat, Bare Back, reported that the steering mechanism on their boat had failed two kilometres off shore.

There were three people on board.

Said Craig Lambinon of Sea Rescue Communications, “Our sea rescue craft, Wild Coast Sun Rescuer, already on the water monitoring the fishing competition, responded to the call.”

He said the casualty boat, being just off the outer breaker line, managed to transport one of the fishermen and all the fishing gear in order to make the distressed boat lighter.

“The skipper of Bare Back and its remaining crewman brought the boat in through the breakers under an escort from the sea rescue craft,” said Lambinon.

They returned safely to shore without any further assistance.

About 30 minutes later volunteers responded to another incident.

Jan van Rensburg (68) on board the ski-boat, X-Ta-Sea, reported that he had a suspected fractured right ankle.

Van Rensburg, who is from Klerksdorp, was three kilometres south of Port Edward, off shore of the Wild Coast Sun.

“Sea rescue medics treated Van Rensburg and confirmed the injury,” said Lambinon.

He said Van Rensburg’s right ankle was caught between a seat on the ski-boat in rough sea swells of about three metres.

“He was transported to shore aboard our sea rescue craft, where Netcare 911 paramedics were standing by,” he said.

Van Rensburg was taken to hospital in a stable condition for further treatment.
