Five KZN old boys chosen for U20 squad

THERE are five former KwaZulu-Natal schoolboys in the SA U20 rugby squad of 28 players that left for France for the IRB Junior World Cup where they will defend the title won in 2012.

A recent injury to Sergeal Pietersen (Grey HS) in a Super Rugby game for the Southern Kings has created a gap that has been filled by Jesse Kriel, SA School’s fullback from last year and a member of the 2012 Maritzburg College side. He is currently his trade with the Blue Bulls U20.

Another former Maritzburg College player in the squad is scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer, who left College at the end of 2011 and is playing for the Sharks U20.

The three others from KZN schools are Sharks U20 flyhalf Robert du Preez (Kearsney), prop Marné Coetzee (Glenwood) and Western Province U20 prop Sti Sithole (Westville).

Coetzee played for the SA Schools side in 2011 when at Waterkloof.

Ruan Steenkamp (ex-Monument), the Blue Bulls flanker, was named captain. He leads a powerful squad that includes the 2012 JWC winning flyhalf Handré Pollard (Paarl Gym). There are three Springbok Sevens Internationals in Cheslin Kolbe (Brackenfell), Seabelo Senatla (Harmony) and Justin Geduld (Tygerberg).

Unfortunately for the Junior Boks, Jan Serfontein (Grey College), the IRB Junior Player of the Year in 2012, has been withdrawn as he is in the Springbok squad for the three Tests taking place over the next three weeks. His place goes to Rohan Janse van Rensburg, an ex-Waterkloof player.

Dawie Theron, the SA U20-coach who last year led the Junior Springboks to their first JWC title, said the selectors had picked the strongest available squad.
