Five bundles of joy usher in the New Year in Pietermaritzburg

2008-01-02 00:00

AT least five little bundles of joy, including a pair of twin girls, made their arrival at Pietermaritzburg’s hospitals in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The city’s first New Year’s baby, Okuhle Kubheka, was born at Edendale Hospital at 12.10 am and weighed in at 3,2 kg.

Her mother, Hlengiwe Kubheka from Imbali, said she named her daughter Okuhle (the beautiful one) because she felt fortunate to have a child born on New Year’s Day and felt blessed by her arrival.

“I was so surprised and at the same time excited to be going into labour at that time. I hope that good things will happen to her and me during 2008,” said the happy mother.

At Medi-Clinic, an exhausted Jenny Colenbrander gave birth to a healthy son whom she named David. David was born at 12.24 am and weighed a whopping 4,188 kg.

“I was so overjoyed and relieved that I gave birth to a very healthy boy after a long labour.”

She said one of the advantages of having a baby in January or December is that they will start school with their age group and not be too young for their class.

Also at Medi-Clinic, Sharoona Bandu gave birth to twin girls. Her first daughter was born at 4.18 am and weighed 1,986 kg and the second one arrived a minute later, weighing 2,048 kg.

“I was ecstatic and did not expect to deliver at that time as I was only due on January 7. I’m very happy to have two lovely and healthy babies even though I have not decided on their names yet,” she said.

Nhlaka Hadebe had a premature girl at 2.25 am at Medi-Clinic, who tipped the scales at just 1,460 kg.

“I’m so excited that my baby was born on New Year’s. It’s like a gift for a new year,” said the relieved new mother.
