Five burglars caught in the act

QUICK work by police and eagle-eyed Safe City staff helped nab five men who burgled a cellular phone shop on Church Street on Monday night.

Safe City spokesperson Lucas Holtzhausen said initially two men were seen by a surveillance camera operator when one climbed on the roof of the shop and jumped off shortly afterwards.

He said they continued monitoring the two, while informing the police of the suspicious activity.

He said it was decided that the police should not intervene but that the suspects would be monitored.

The men were later seen being joined by a third man and they went back into the shop. “Two of the three then entered the shop through the roof and handed a parcel to the one accomplice standing outside. The suspect walked away and another suspect came and he too was handed some black bags,” Holtzhausen said.

The man left the bags in Retief Street. The other men, who went through the roof, then came down and handed another two bags to an accomplice, he said.

Whilst the burglary took place it was established that the burglars were using a vehicle that was parked in Church Street outside Honcho’s.

Police swooped and arrested five suspects, recovering a large quantity of stolen cellphones and airtime cards in the car.

It was later established that the vehicle was reported stolen in Gauteng.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said they will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.
