Five hurt in school shooting incident

2010-02-19 00:00

AN excited gun-toting high school pupil wounded five schoolmates when his gun went off at a school in Verulam yesterday.

The Temple Valley Secondary pupil is reported to have wanted to show off with the gun to his friends, but a shot went off accidentally, wounding six pupils in the legs.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the shot was fired in a corridor at the school.

KZN police spokesman Superintendent Jay Naicker said pupils were changing classes at about 1 pm when the boy took the gun from his bag.

It is alleged that the bullet ricocheted, hitting five girls and a boy. The show-off fled the scene with the gun.

“The five injured girls were taken to Osizweni hospital for treatment, while the boy was treated at the scene with slight injuries,” said Naicker.

Later in the day four people were arrested for questioning.

A 9 mm pistol was found in their possession. Naicker said at this stage it was not known whether it was the gun involved in the incident.

The injured were Smangele Mabaso (grade 11), Happy Mtengwa (grade 10), Mbali Mthembu (grade eight), Nokwazi Ngcobo, Snethemba Mbatha and Andile Mkhizi (both in grade nine).

Education superintendentgeneral Cassius Lubisi said the department was shocked by the incident and will investigate.

“We reiterate our call that parents and community must assist in warning learners about the danger of weapons or experimenting with dangerous devices.”

Police are investigating six counts of attempted murder against the suspect.

In a separate incident a 21-year-old pupil was stabbed at Hlonono High school in Maphumulo.

Police said the man is alleged to have had an argument with another pupil and was stabbed once in the back.

The victim ran away, but collapsed.

The suspect then stabbed another pupil who was trying to separate them.

Both the injured were rushed to a local clinic, but one died on the way.

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested at the school premises and a knife was recovered.

He was charged with murder and will appear in the Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court soon.
