2011-04-05 00:00

FOUR adults and a 15-year-old boy made brief appearances in two magistrates’ courts yesterday in connection with the murder of Naushad Mohamed (23) as well as charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm arising from the incident where he and others were allegedly beaten with baseball bats and other weapons prior to the shooting incident at G’s Café in Raisethorpe on Friday night.

The Witness also learned yesterday that a sixth suspect — believed to be a 17-year-old youth — has been arrested and is expected to appear in court today.

A packed public gallery yesterday heard the prosecutor inform magistrate Bessie du Preez that the state will oppose bail for Adrian Muthusamy (38), Deon Maharaj (28), Leona Naidoo (33) and Kurt Naidoo (33), all of Copesville.

All were initially remanded in custody until April 14 for a formal bail application. It was later agreed however that Leona Naidoo — a mother of two young children — will be back in court tomorrow pending discussions concerning the possiblity of bail.

The teenaged boy was also remanded in custody until April 6, pending a probation officer’s report.

The charges listed against the accused are for the murder of Mohamed, assault of Yubendran Lutchman by punching him in the face, assault of Jonathan Govender by “hitting him all over his body with a baseball bat and pick handle” and unlawful possession of a 9 mm pistol.
