Five killed as taxi crashes

2014-04-19 00:00

FIVE people travelling from Johannesburg to Nkandla were killed early yesterday when their taxi crashed near Greytown.

KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert McKenzie said 12 injured people were taken to hospital in Greytown.

The accident was attended to by state and private paramedics and rescue staff from Greytown and Estcourt.

Transport Department spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said officers were concerned that bottles of alcohol were found in the taxi. “We have a long Easter week-end ahead of us and people should drink at home where it is safe because drinking and driving is dangerous as well as illegal,” she said.

She cautioned those driving long distances to plan their trips. “They must not think travelling at night is safer because there are stray animals during the night.”
