Five-minute Gang

2008-06-03 00:00

A clever and dangerous syndicate of criminals has become popularly known as the “five-minute gang” because of the speed with which the gang members can enter a locked and barricaded property and help itself to high-tech possessions. For almost two months it has been terrorising the suburbs of Clarendon, Montrose and Chase Valley in this city.

Last weekend, thanks to speedy intervention by the South African Police Services (SAPS) and a confrontation by a brave employee of a security firm, four gang members were intercepted in their BMW. While they fled on foot, two were arrested while the others escaped.

The saga is not yet over and vigilance will still be needed. The affected suburbs, like so much of the country, feel that they have been under siege and their inhabitants can no longer know who on the street is friend or foe. This kind of criminality saps people’s emotional energy and undermines the nation’s social cohesion and wellbeing.
