FIVE people were killed when two vehicles collided at the Newark turnoff on the R102 in the Ilembe district of northern KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

Police are still investigating the cause of the incident but an eyewitnesses told IPSS Medical head Paul Herbst that a gold Toyota Corolla, with five women inside, was coming from P110, going towards the R102.

All five women died at the scene.

“We were told that the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection and a white Isuzu bakkie collided with it.”

Herbst said the driver of the Isuzu was in a critical condition and was rushed by advanced life support paramedics to hospital.

KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the jaws-of-life had to be used to extricate the injured man from the wreckage.

“After being freed from the vehicle, the patient’s condition improved,” said McKenzie.
