Flooded street: Barefoot ferry man makes R42

2012-09-29 00:00

SOMERSET-WEST — When heavy rain turned the main street of this Cape town into a river on Thursday, one man saw an opportunity.

Patrick Malgas (39) had a sign printed up, offering to carry people across the “river” for R2 a time.

“I made R42,” he said yesterday. “One woman gave me R7.

“There was even one big woman, with a baby on her back and everything, that I carried.

“Some people were scared, but when they saw I didn’t drop anyone they also wanted to ride.”

A local business printed his sign. Malgas took off his shoes, rolled up his pants and started to make money.

“I was soon soaking wet, but it was worth it,” he said.

He has lived on the streets for 13 years. Asked where he got the idea for his “business”, he first said “from God”, but then admitted he saw someone else do the same about seven years ago.
