Floors on the wing this weekend

WHILE the Sharks have delayed naming their team for Saturday’s Currie Cup rugby match, Free State Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské has chosen versatile flank Kabamba Floors on the wing for King’s Park.

The Sharks are waiting on the fitness of number eight Ryan Kankowski and prop Beast Mtawarira before confirming their starting line-up.

Drotské has lost three wings — Springbok Jongi Nokwe, Wilton Pietersen and Fabian Juries — to injury over the past fortnight and has turned to Floors, a skillful ball player, to fill the gap.

There will be a familiar face on the right wing with Eddie Fredericks, who has worried the Sharks before, returning for his 97th game. Floors, who played on the wing from the bench against Western Province at the weekend, replaces Juries.

Of course, this match will be won and lost in the forward battle rather than out on the wing and Drotské has named a powerful pack. The Free Staters are particularly strong at loose forward where Springbok and captain Juan Smith is in the rugged company of Duanne Vermeulen and Hendre Scholtz with the highly-rated Heinrich Brussow on the bench.

Free State still have flyhalf Chris Rossouw unavailable because of concussion and Tewis de Bruyn will partner Neil Powell at halfback.

The Cheetahs coach has included a third member of last year’s Free State Craven Week side in the match 22. Coenie Oosthuizen was yesterday named on the bench while the talented Robert Ebersohn is at centre and Pietersen, before his injury, has already made his mark on the wing.

The Cheetahs, after their weekend loss to Province, need to beat the Sharks to stay in contention for a home semi-final, while John Plumtree’s side, currently at the top of the log with a three-point cushion, cannot afford to drop points at home if they are to finish in the top two.

The match kicks off at 5.05 pm on Saturday.

Free State Cheetahs: Bevin Fortuin, Eddie Fredericks, Robert Ebersohn, Meyer Bosman, Kabamba Floors, Tewis de Bruyn, Neil Powell, Duanne Vermeulen, Juan Smith (capt.), Hendre Scholtz, Barend Pieterse, David de Villiers, Kobus Calldo, Adriaan Strauss, Wian du Preez.

Replacements: Richardt Strauss, Coen Oosthuizen, Nico Breedt, Heinrich Brussow, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, JW Jonker, Hendrik Meyer.
