Florida Road beefs up security

2007-12-22 00:00

In a bid to deter crime, the Florida Road business community yesterday launched a security plan following the recent Upper Highway security launch, after increasingly bold criminal attacks on restaurants and residents in adjoining areas.

City manager Michael Sutcliffe, who officially launched the plan, said: “Florida Road is one place we as the city want to start selling”. Citing the great vibe and accessibility, Sutcliffe said that although security is in place, “the problems in South Africa will not be solved by security alone”.

The plan includes the registration of car guards who will work together with Berea police and Blue Security.

With a planned street party on New Year’s Eve, Florida Road Business Association (FRBA) welcomed police operations that were previously perceived to be bad for business.

FRBA chairman Mike Holland told Weekend Witness that the drunken driving campaign on Florida Road, initiated months ago, created awareness of the consequences.

Holland added that they had not noticed any decline in business since the police campaigns started.
