‘Flourishing’: Maritzburg Oval Craft Market celebrates 25th anniversary

2011-06-30 00:00

THE Maritzburg Oval Craft Market, the first of its kind to be established in KwaZulu-Natal, is celebrating a quarter of a century this year.

The organiser, Monica Ashe, said, “The Oval market has not only stood the test of time, when many other enterprises have come and gone, but has flourished.

“It continues to draw crowds from far and wide by maintaining a high standard of craft stalls and providing a variety of entertainment.”

The market takes place at the Alexandra Park Cricket Oval on the first Sunday of every month. It hosts about 100 stalls and attracts 2 000 to 3 000 people every month.

Ashe told The Witnss that the Oval craft market has better stalls than markets in Durban and other surrounding areas.

“We also have entertainment for the kids. Usually they play marbles, have face paints, do swings and there is usually someone playing a violin.”

She said that this year is special for the market because few things last 25 years in Pietermaritzburg.

“I would like to thank the public who have supported us and we look forward to this relationship continuing for many more years.”
