A MOTORIST was arrested following the death of his passenger in an accident in Pietermaritzburg yesterday morning.

This is one of about 20 reported accidents in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday, in which three people died and about 20 others were injured.

It is believed that the driver, who was unhurt, lost control of his vehicle at the intersection of Cleland and Stonyhouse roads in Cleland.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the passenger was thrown out of the vehicle as it rolled and was crushed under the wreck.

Another accident cost the driver his life on the N3 off-ramp to the M7 near Pinetown at about 2.30 am. Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the driver lost control of his Land Rover.

In another accident, a person was killed in Umgababa on the South coast.

Meanwhile, a worker cutting grass was killed when a bakkie ran over three people on the N3 in Durban on Thursday.

This is the second recent incident in which a road worker was killed in KZN. On May 26, a worker was killed on the R56 near Richmond.

Late yesterday, 16 minibus taxi commuters were slightly injured when their taxi overturned near Merrivale, ER23 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley reported.
