Focus is on SA Nedbank Champs

2009-08-28 00:00

IN running, the focus nationally is on the SA Nedbank 10-km Championships in Stellenbosch tomorrow, where a strong KZN women’s team is expected to make it to the medal podium.

Although missing marathoner Tanith Maxwell, who only returned from the World Athletics Championships in Berlin on Tuesday morning, the combination of Jenna Challenor, Danielle Adlam, Janene Carey and Makhosi Mhlongo should have the firing power to take on the Gauteng combinations.

The province’s other medal hope lies with Miya Lawrie in the 40 to 49 category. Lawrie won gold in the national half-marathon championships, but tends to find the going a tad tougher over the shorter distance and will need to be at her best to beat Michelle Bartman from Western Province.

Ultra-distance runners are reminded that entries for the annual Midlands 100 mile race from Winterton to Pietermaritzburg close today. The race commences from Winterton Country Club at 7 pm on Friday, September 4. Brian Jarmey-Swan has more details on 083 496 5980.

Although the eThekwini Marathon scheduled for September 27 has been cancelled, the KZNA office has announced that Verulam Athletic Club have quickly stepped into the breach to host a 42,2-km race from the King’s Park Cycle Stadium, and that this will incorporate the KZN Marathon Championships. They will also include both a half-marathon and 10-km distance. More information is available from Anand Naicker on 083 783 6363.
