Food donations flood in for storm victims

2009-01-09 00:00

Maritzburgers have donated generously in response to a Witness call to donate cans of food for storm relief, after Premier S’bu Ndebele urged people to stock up in anticipation of more disasters.

Witness advertising and circulation manager Peter Travis said the idea came to him while he read of the premier’s call.

While this is a good idea for people in more affluent areas, it is poor people who are more likely to suffer. Travis thought it would be a good idea to donate to those who can’t afford to save food.

Travis said they have asked the Red Cross to use the donations to make food parcels to send to those in need.

Advertising supervisor Moira Smith, who is in charge of the project, said she is excited that people are already donating, and asked for donations of baby formula and baby food.

Donations can be made at Save Cash and Carry; Pick n Pay in Victoria Road; the Parklane, Commercial and Northway Spars; and the Hayfields and Cascades centres.
