Football Fest: PMB to stage SA’s first contest

2011-07-20 00:00

YOUNG footballers have a chance to become members of an elite Pietermaritzburg soccer team who will play against other regions in the Lucas Radebe Tribute Festival in Soweto in October this year, thanks to the Football First Programme.

As part of the Football World Cup last year First National Bank invested R15 million in artificial pitches across the country, including Pietermaritzburg’s Wadley Stadium.

The South African Football Association (Safa) also became involved by certifying three local coaches with a minimum Safa introductory football qualification.

The coaches were trained to run a development clinic, identify talent and manage equipment and facilities.

Since the programme began in May, weekly coaching clinics have been held for boys and girls from six to 11 years in the grassroots group and groups of under-13s and under-15s.

The best players from the weekly clinics, which run until November, will be chosen for the elite squad, which will play at the Tribute Festival.

The Football First Festival competition will also see matches being played between 12 local schools from July 30 to 31.

The Pietermaritzburg competition is the first in the country.
