MORE than 30 000 South Africans have joined the world of fantasy football management as they compete during the new English Premier League season.

The Fantasy Premier League 2010/11 game can be joined by anybody with online access.

Players are referred to as “managers” and are required to choose a squad of 15 Premier League players who they think will excel this season. Points are allocated to the players a manager has chosen for his or her team based on their real-life performances in the Premier League season. Goals, clean sheets, minutes played and assists are some of the things points are allocated for; yellow and red cards will see players lose points.

About two million participants from all around the world have joined the Fantasy Premier League this season.

The overall winner of the game, who will be determined only at the end of the season, will win an all-expenses-paid trip for two to watch an English Premier League game featuring a team of the winner’s choice next season.

There is also a monthly prize that will earn the “manager of the month”a digital camera, an MP3 player and a replica football jersey of the winner’s choice.

For participants who join the league late or are not in the running to win prizes, there is an option to create their own league and invite other players to join.

Only England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Australia and Malaysia have more participants than South Africa in the fantasy league this season, proving that there is a strong presence of English football fans in Mzansi.
