Forged signature: man intends to plead not guilty

2012-05-01 00:00

AN Mpumalanga man, Senzo Zondi (30) — who allegedly used a letter bearing the forged signature of KwaZulu-Natal’s first lady, Dr May Mkhize, to perpetrate fraud — made another brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg regional court yesterday.

Zondi is on bail of R500.

He has not yet formally pleaded to the fraud charge he faces in court, but stated in an affidavit used in support of a bail application that he intends to plead not guilty.

Zondi also stated in his affidavit that he currently works as a bodyguard earning about R5 500 per month, however, he did not indicate who his employer is.

According to the charge sheet it is alleged that he and another person — who is not named — had defrauded Masilamaney Subramanien of the BP Garage in Hammarsdale.

It is alleged that they were pretending that they had obtained a contract from the Department of Health to deliver medical drugs to prisons, and that they wanted to purchase five vehicles to deliver the drugs.

At the time he did so it is alleged that Zondi was fully aware that no such contract existed and that the motor vehicles in question — each of which was valued at R80 000 — would not be paid for.

The case has been adjourned to May 11.
