Former ANC employees lose dismissal case

2014-04-16 00:00

CAPE TOWN — Former employees of the ANC’s parliamentary caucus who took the party to the Labour Court over alleged unfair dismissal lost their case yesterday.

The group of 15 alleged that President Jacob Zuma addressed them personally and other party officials promised them jobs after the 2009 elections if they helped win votes.

However, after the election, the ANC let 170 employees go. It said in its court papers that since it won 33 fewer seats in 2009, it needed fewer parliamentary staff.

The applicants argued that the ANC wasted R60 million, which could have covered their salaries, on the campaign.

They said they were personally told by Zuma that those whose jobs were threatened would be redeployed.

Judge Hilary Rabkin-Naicker said the applicants were always aware that their posts were dependent on the number of seats won by the party.
