Former Comrades champ kicked , punched, threathened with knife

ATTACKERS threw former Comrades champion Nick Bester off his bike, kicked and punched him and threatened him with a knife.

Bester (50) suffered a broken rib in the attack in bush near Pretoria yesterday and his R50 000 Berg mountain bike was stolen.

Hours after the attack, one of his assailants was arrested in possession of his cellphone — and the shirt that was cut from his body.

Bester said he went riding at 6.15 am, and had scarcely arrived at the bushy area when he was set upon by three men.

Two of them had knives.

“Before I knew what was happening, they pulled me off my bike, threw me to the ground and kicked and hit me,” he said.

“One held a knife to my throat and demanded cash and guns. I said I don’t ride with them.”

He went to get his phone out of the pocket of his cycling shirt, and they grabbed it.

“I was sure if they got me into the bush they would stab me,” he said.

Instead, they cut his shirt off, slashed the waistband of his shorts and groped down his pants looking for money. They left him bound hand and foot and fled with the bike.
