Former Howick mayor Humphries dies at 81

FORMER Howick mayor Keith Paterson Humphries (81) died peacefully on Tuesday.

Humphries was born in 1933 to fourth generation residents of Howick.

One of the founders of Wessa Umngeni Valley Nature Reserve and a farmer on the family farm in Howick, Humphries had a love for the land and the community.

He served on the Howick Town Council for 16 years and as Howick mayor for three years.

He was the charter member of the Howick Lions club and was active in the group for 40 years.

In 2014 Humphries was presented with the Louis Halse award for his tireless dedication to the community and the Howick-Umngeni Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, June Engelbrecht, his two children and four grandchildren.

Humphries’s daughter Alison Engelbrecht said he led a long and happy life and gave his all to the community.

His wake will be held at the Lions club house in Wessa Umngeni Valley Nature Reserve on Monday at 5 pm where his 81st birthday will be celebrated.
