Former KZN treasury head expresses joy at being indicted

FORMER KZN treasury head Sipho Shabalala has expressed joy at being finally indicted following his much-publicised arrest in September last year.

Shabalala believes the serving of the indictment marks the first step in his journey to clear his name.

Family spokesperson Vuyo Mkhize said the state’s case is that Shabalala accepted bribes comprising of a stake for his wife in a dormant medical supplies company owned by Gaston Savoi, Skyros Medical Supplies (Pty) Ltd, as well as gifts of one night’s stay at a hotel, hardwood flooring, a tie and R1 053 000, all from Savoi.

Mkhize said Shabalala has always maintained that he never solicited or handled a bribe in his almost 30 years in public service.

“Of all the other laughable allegations against Mr Shabalala, none is more ludicrous than the one that Mr Savoi bribed him with a necktie.

“In what must surely rank as one of the greatest ironies of the 21st century, PWC — the firm that conducted the forensic investigation into the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs water purification plant deal — seems to have forgotten that they themselves have gifted Mr Shabalala with, at least, three ties and numerous luxury pens in the past,” Mkhize said.

He said Shabalala was happy that there now seems to be an acceptance on the state’s side that the process of procuring the water purification plants from Intaka was both lawful and regular. — WR.
