Forum: Dump Zuma and deliver, ANC told

2008-11-16 00:00

The African National Congress asked for frank discussion at its forum for activists and minority groups in the Durban City Hall yesterday … and that was what the audience dished up.

David Knox of Pietermaritzburg told the forum he believes a problem for the ANC is that it has lost moral high ground.

“I raise the question whether Jacob Zuma is a good future president. I think he is not.”

Knox said he believes two actions by the ANC would take the wind out of the sails of new Congress of the People (Cope): Jacob Zuma should not be the next president of the country; and it should organise a judicial inquiry into the arms deal.

Msunduzi councillor Les Naidoo called on fellow councillors to take service delivery seriously.

Academic Kapil Satyapal asked why the ANC leadership is not coming out in defence of academic freedom that is being “emasculated at a local institution of higher learning”.

Former Robben Island prisoner Sunny Singh called attention to the provincial health sector, saying there is a lot of deadwood in government.

“The leadership has to deliver and remove this deadwood. Look at how we successfully got rid of Dr Beetroot Manto-Shabalala … ”

Other members of the audience berated people who get leadership positions in the ANC and look after their own interests instead of that of the community.

These people are labelled “Comrade Tenders”, because they only emerge when tenders and contracts are being offered.

uMgungundlovu District Mayor and the convenor of the forum, Yusuf Bhamjee, assured the gathering that the ANC is listening to their concerns.

“The ANC’s position historically is to encourage debate,” he said.
