Forum not to act against school

PLANS to file an urgent court application allegedly over school reports illegally withheld from pupils for their parents’ failure to pay school fees at Eastwood Senior Secondary have been withdrawn.

The school will be open tomorrow between 8 am until noon for pupils, parents and guardians to collect all outstanding reports, after The Witness ran an article that the forum was representing a number of parents, whose children’s reports were allegedly held for non-payment.

Forum chair, Fred Wagner, who labelled the act as “procedurally unfair” was busy with legal documents on Monday.

He said the community was devastated by high levels of unemployment and the school was taking advantage of the fact many of these parents were illiterate and did not know their rights.

Since the story was published, Wagner says he has received a flood of phone calls from parents in the same predicament who also wanted representation.

Wagner added that one of these calls was from a lawyer willing to take up their case.

“I also received a call from the principal who told me that he was currently out of Pietermaritzburg, but said the district office has made special arrangements for the school to be opened tomorrow so that all the reports can be released.

“We have decided to withdraw the court application since the matter has been resolved,” said Wagner.

Meanwhile, parent Themba Zuma said parents at Grange Primary School are experiencing a similar problem.

While in his case, it is not reports that are being withheld, he said the school won’t give him his child’s transfer script because he is in arrears.

Zuma confessed to owing the school around R2 000, but said he does not work.
